Since 2003, Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000 has been a leading online publisher of historical documentation about women and gender.

Founded by award-winning historians Kathryn Kish Sklar and Tom Dublin, WASM publishes edited collections of primary documents and full-text sources that focus on the history of women and social activism in the United States and beyond.

Aimed at students and teachers of women's and gender history, WASM is published by Alexander Street Press (part of Proquest/Clarivate) and currently hosts over 5,000 projects.  The collection includes more than 250,000 pages of materials, including correspondence, reports, news clippings, pamphlets, posters, personal narratives, advice literature, training guides, interviews, and other visual and textual evidence of women's activism over time and across regions.  Materials are organized as projects around research questions, as primary source sets, and as reference tools, including book reviews.  WASM currently has 500 subscribers (mostly libraries) and is published twice per year, in fall and spring.

Portland State University's History Department will be the home for WASM's editorial team from 2024 to 2029.  WASM's home at PSU means that History Department students have a special opportunity to get hands-on experience with digital publishing, mainly through two Graduate Assistantships offered each academic year.

Graduate Assistants with WASM work on a range of tasks related to academic publishing in the online environment.  These tasks include research, permissions, proofreading, communications, and general project management.  GAs work closely with editor Professor Patricia A. Schechter (Portland State University) as well as the book review editor Professor Erica Hayden (Trevecca Nazarene University).
