Professor Emerita Linda Walton retired from the History Department July 1, 2013 after 35 years of teaching Chinese, East Asian, and world history, 32 of them at PSU. She established the Institute for Asian Studies at PSU, served as its director for three years, and was chair of the History Department for six years. A recipient of the Millar Award in 2012, Linda used the award to help fund a research trip to China for a new project on Confucian academies and cultural heritage tourism in contemporary China. She eventually co-edited a conference volume, contributed to another, and published a journal article on topics related to this research.

Since retirement, Linda has also completed a book in her original research field of Song (960-1179) and Yuan (1280-1367) China, Middle Imperial China, 900-1350: A New History (Cambridge University Press, 2023). Most recently, Linda was a Senior Research Scholar at Edinburgh University (Scotland), working on a European Research Council project on Sino-Byzantine comparative history.

Linda joined the FOH board because she wants to continue to build the strength of the History Department, especially by helping to raise money to support faculty and student research and to develop public programs that let the community know what a rich resource the History Department is.
