What is College For?: Teaching and Learning in a Polarized Age

Wednesday February 11th 2026 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

With higher education under unprecedented assault, it is time to ask ourselves some basic questions. What is the purpose of college? Does it go beyond vocational training? Has it strayed too far in the direction of ideological indoctrination? William Deresiewicz, best-selling author and former Yale professor, will explore the role of universities in preparing students for healthy participation in civic life. The talk will be followed by a Q&A. All are welcome. The goal of the event will be to start a conversation about the mission of academic inquiry, especially among the young, in a politically divided society.

This event is co-sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences; Applied Linguistics; English; History; Judaic Studies; Philosophy; Politics & Global Affairs; and World Language & Literatures.
