Desire, Humor, and the End of an Empire: On Translating One Thousand and One Kisses

Join us for a Turkish Studies presentation with Burcu Karahan is an Advanced Lecturer in Comparative Literature at Stanford University. She specializes in 19th-century literature, particularly late Ottoman literature and literary translation. She is the translator of One Thousand and One Kisses: The Most Joyous and Flirtatious Stories (Translation Attached, 2025) and the co-translator of Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar's 1941 novel Mister Fahim with Melih Levi (Everest, 2026). Her forthcoming co-translation is Samipaşazade Sezai's 1888 anti-slavery novel The Adventures of a Slave Girl with İclal Vanwesenbeeck (Edinburgh University Press, 2026).
