Before Classes Start

  1. Determine what emergency information you will include in your class syllabus, such as evacuation routes, assembly location (see below), or resource lists. Suggested text is included at the bottom of this page.
  2. Save CPSO’s number into your mobile phone so it is readily available in an emergency
  3. Sign up for PSUAlert and/or confirm your existing registered number via Banweb (Employees) and myPSU (students)
  4. Be personally prepared for an emergency at home or on campus
    1. Get Informed: Review the PSU Emergency Procedures Guide, Campus Closure Guidance and OAI's Instructional Continuity During Closures.
    2. Make a Plan: With your class, department, friends and family, discuss how to prepare and respond to emergencies where you live, learn, work and play. Don’t forget to practice the plan!
    3. Build a Kit: Work on a personal and department emergency supply kit.
    4. Build Community
      • Engage Your Department: Collaborate with colleagues to discuss departmental emergency plans, evacuation routes, and communication methods.
      • Empower Your Students: Share preparedness resources and encourage participation in campus safety initiatives. Creating a dialogue about readiness helps reduce fear and improves response in emergencies.
  5. Consider classroom evacuation.
    1. Visit your classrooms to check the building evacuation maps (posted in most hallways) for routes and building assembly areas.
    2. Know at least two evacuation routes from each of your classrooms
    3. Pick a specific assembly area, near the building’s designated area, for each class
  6. Print hard copies of the class rosters and keep them with your class materials so that you will know if all students are present after an evacuation
  7. Understand what to do and who to call should there be a medical emergency in your classroom

On the First Day of Each Term:

  1. Share campus (PSU Emergency Procedures Guide), Campus Closure Page and regional emergency preparedness resources (City of Portland, Multnomah County, State of Oregon
  2. Review #5 above with your students:
    1. Describe at least two evacuation routes from each of your classrooms
    2. Tell your students the specific assembly area, near the building’s designated area, that you have chosen for this class
    3. Point out the emergency procedures poster (if in a general pool classroom)
  3. Practice your evacuation routes by entering and exiting the building using the different routes you identified.
