Admissions | Geology Master’s

PSU’s geology master’s program is designed to train geology students beyond the baccalaureate degree for professional employment or for advanced graduate work.

Admissions Requirements

  • Meet PSU’s minimum requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology or closely related science
    • If you have a bachelor’s degree in a science other than geology, please consult with your potential advisor about deficiencies you may need to make up. 
  • Expected preparation would include the following:
    • Two terms of calculus
    • Two terms of physics (preferably calculus-based)
    • Two terms of chemistry
    • If you have not completed these classes, please consult with your potential advisor about deficiencies you may need to make up.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in geology-related and allied science courses

Deadlines

This program only admits students once a year for fall term: Jan. 15.

Application Materials

Below is the list of the information and materials you will need to provide as part of your application. We recommend preparing these materials in advance of submitting your application.

  • Potential Advisor: Graduate students in our program work closely with their advisor. Before applying, contact tenure-track faculty that share your interests and with whom you wish to work. Set up interviews (virtual or in-person) with prospective advisors to discuss common interests.
  • Resume or CV
  • Statement of Purpose
  • GRE (optional)
  • References: Submit contact information for at least three individuals who can comment on your academic performance or attest to your skills as they pertain to your selected program of study. Portland State University will contact your references and provide them with instructions for submitting recommendation forms.
  • Copies of transcripts from each college or university attended
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (if applicable)
