Courses & By-Arrangement

Courses in the School of Earth, Environment and Society span five academic areas, each with its own course prefix. Use the sections below to explore course offerings, plan ahead, and find guidance on registration.

For complete course titles and descriptions, visit the PSU Bulletin. Please note that not all courses listed in the Bulletin are offered every year.

Junior Cluster (UNST): Courses with a “U” in the course number satisfy Junior Cluster general education requirements. Courses used to meet the requirements of your major cannot also be used to satisfy the Junior Cluster.

Race & Ethnic Studies (RESR): Several courses in the School of Earth, Environment and Society are approved to satisfy the RESR requirement. Courses used to fulfill the RESR may also count toward major, minor, University Studies, Honors, and/or elective requirements.

Find Courses This Term

To see which courses are offered in the current or upcoming term, use PSU’s course search tools. These tools allow you to search by subject, course number, instructor, modality, and meeting time.

Plan Ahead: Course Projections

The Course Projections Guide shows which courses are typically offered in future terms and academic years. While projections are not guarantees, they are a valuable resource for long-term planning.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Course projections may change due to staffing or enrollment
  • Some upper-division and field courses are offered annually or biennially
  • Not all courses are offered every year

Registering for By-Arrangement Courses

By-arrangement courses allow students to earn credit for internships, independent study, research projects, or other individualized learning experiences. These courses are arranged directly with a faculty instructor and registered through PSU’s eBy-Arrangement (eBA) dashboard.

How to Register

  1. Identify a faculty instructor willing to supervise your project.
  2. Submit your request through the eBy-Arrangement (eBA) dashboard by the end of the first week of the term.
  3. Complete any required training, such as Responsible Conduct of Research, if applicable. You can find the course by clicking “Register” in the top right corner, and then in the “Select Your Organization Affiliation” box, start typing in Portland State and it should auto-populate. From there, follow the prompts to take the course.

Credits & Grading

Credit hours are determined in consultation with your faculty instructor. Most by-arrangement courses are graded, unless they are specifically for thesis or dissertation work.
