  1. Chris Cartwright, international and global studies, served on the Program Planning Committee for the International Leadership Association’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Summit titled, “Call to Awareness, Advocacy, and Action for Inclusive Leadership” from July 15-16. 
  2. Chris Cartwright, international and global studies, facilitated a month-long public training in July titled, “Assessment to Support Development of Intercultural, Global, and Inclusive Competence” for Purdue University’s Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research (CILMAR) Step-Up Zone.
  3. Chris Cartwright, international and global studies, facilitated two panel discussions, “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: The Battle Facing Organizations — Equality Versus Equity” and “Nothing Will or Should Be the Same: Leadership Beyond Crisis,” on Oct. 25 at the International Leadership Association’s annual conference.
  4. Chris Cartwright, international and global studies, participated in a panel discussion titled, “Learning to Lead in Culturally Complex Times” on Oct. 28  at the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration annual conference. 
  5. Kelly Gonzalez, OHSU-PSU School of Public Health faculty, was named a PSU Presidential Fellow for 2021-2022. As part of the Presidential Fellows Program, Gonzales, who is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, will focus on establishing a collective community of practice to foster Indigenous equity by understanding and initiating processes to heal the lasting impacts of colonialism within the academic space. Her work will be rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems, guided by Indigenous leaders, and seeks to end Indigenous erasure. Together, this valuable work addresses institutional gaps that undermine equity and anti-racism initiatives and builds a base to cultivate a socially just university that advances Indigenous futures — and a future of justice that is affirming for all.
  6. Janet Hamilton and Charla Mathwick, business faculty, won the 2021 Tate Award for the best case for a case titled “Green Zebra: Grow Fast or Grow Slow? Case B,” published in the Case Research Journal in 2020.
  7. Peter Harkema, director of Oregon Consensus, was recognized for his part in helping craft a final agreement between private forestry representatives, small forestland owners, conservation leaders and fishing organizations in a historic proposal for new protections for sensitive species on over 10 million acres of forestland in Oregon.   8. John MacArthur, sustainable transportation program manager, and Nathan McNeil, urban studies and planning, worked with the Portland Bureau of Transportation to evaluate a local pilot program called Transportation Wallet for Residents of Affordable Housing, which offers transportation incentives for low-income residents.
  9. Steve Reichow, chemistry faculty, was awarded the 2021 Richard T. Jones New Investigator Award, which recognizes a new investigator who shows exceptional promise early in a career in biomedical research, from the Medical Research Foundation of Oregon. 
  10. Jack Straton, physics and university studies faculty, had one of his photographs chosen to be part of the June 2021 Group Art Show at Jones Gallery, in Kansas City, Missouri.
  11. Rana Yaghmaiain
    Rana Yaghmaian, education faculty, is the new chair of the Counselor Education Department.
    Rana Yaghmaian, education faculty, is the new chair of the Counselor Education Department for PSU’s College of Education. Yaghmaian researches the experiences of people with disabilities who hold multiple minoritized identities, and she uses her research as a tool for training social justice oriented counselors. She was the 2020 recipient of Portland State University’s President’s Diversity Award, as well as the Oregon Counseling Association (ORCA)’s 2020 Leona Tyler Award, which is ORCA’s highest honor.
