Friday October 23rd 2026 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Chemistry & Cultural Heritage in Greece

What can chemistry teach us about preserving the past?

Join us for a two-week faculty-led program exploring the chemistry behind the preservation of cultural heritage. Travel through Athens, Naxos, Santorini, and Crete to examine how scientists and conservators use chemistry to understand, protect, and restore ancient monuments, archaeological sites, and museum collections.

Visit iconic sites including the Acropolis, Akrotiri, and Knossos, and learn from archaeologists, conservators, and scientific experts through site visits, guest lectures, workshops, and behind-the-scenes experiences. Explore topics such as material degradation, preventive conservation, restoration, and scientific analysis, and connect classroom concepts to real-world conservation challenges.

This program is designed for students interested in chemistry, archaeology, art conservation, materials science, and cultural heritage.

Program Dates: June 14–27, 2027
Course: CH 410 Materials Characterization for Cultural Heritage (4 credits)
Prerequisite: CH 426
