Student Interns

A Student Internship is intended primarily for undergraduate students who want to engage in an internship learning experience under the guidance of a PSU faculty member, as part of their home institution degree program. Graduate students can also be a student intern if they specifically want to complete an internship program.

About the Internship

The internship is a work-based experience that fulfills the requirements of the student's home university educational objectives or degree requirements. The student, home university and PSU faculty supervisor must prepare an internship Training Plan with specific internship goals and learning objectives. It is recommended that the student intern and faculty sponsor prepare and agree to the Training Plan before starting the application.

  • The internship may be for one academic term to one year (12 months maximum).
  • Must be full-time (32 hours per week minimum).
  • No more than 20% "clerical" work - the internship must be a work/study experience and not to fill a labor need.
  • Only one internship is allowed per major or degree program.
  • The internship must be in-person and on-campus (at PSU) as much as possible.
  • The student and PSU faculty supervisor must complete a Training Plan and a mid-term and final evaluation for the internship.

Student Intern Eligibility

  • The student intern must be enrolled in a degree program and in good academic standing at a college or university outside the U.S.

  • The internship must fulfill the educational objectives or requirements of the home institution.

  • The student intern must return to their home institution to complete their studies after the internship at PSU.

  • The student intern must have adequate financial support for living expenses in Portland, Oregon. Financial support can come from any source such as PSU payment, home institution, scholarships or grants, or personal funds.

  • The student intern must have English proficiency adequate to be successful in their program at PSU. Scholars may have an English interview, test score or academic documentation to show their English skill level.

Home Institution Letter of Verification

As part of the Student Intern application, interns must submit a letter from their home university, signed by a Dean, Department Chair or academic advisor, verifying the following information:

  • The student is enrolled in the institution and is in good academic standing.
  • The student plans to return to their program to complete their studies and degree program after the internship.
  • The internship will fulfill the educational objectives or requirements of the student's degree program.
  • Approval of payment if the student will be paid by PSU.
