Drivers License/State ID

The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues Oregon state drivers licenses and state IDs. If you are a resident in the state of Oregon more than 30 days and plan to drive a car, motorcycle or other motorized vehicle, then you are required to get an Oregon drivers license.

If you are not planning to drive while in Oregon, but will be here for an extended period of time, a state ID can be a very convenient form of official ID so you do not need to carry your passport with for day-to-day purposes.

To apply for a drivers license or state ID, you will need:

  1. Passport
  2. DS-2019 (J visa holders)
  3. I-94
  4. Proof of Oregon residential address (e.g. utility bill, bank statement, or rental agreement)

If you are applying for a drivers license, you will also have to pass a written and driving exam before your license is issued. Be sure to study the Oregon Driver Manual before your exams!

J-1 scholars who have just arrived in the U.S. must complete their Check-In before applying for a drivers license or ID.

The closest DMV office to PSU is on the corner of SW 6th Avenue and Salmon Street. For a complete list of DMV offices, see the DMV locations web page for the Portland area.
