J-1 Rights & Responsibilities

J-1 Rights & Responsibilities

It is important to know your rights and responsibilities as a J-1 exchange visitor.

  • You should be familiar with the rules you must follow to maintain your J-1 status in the United States.
  • The The Exchange Visitor Program "Welcome Brochure" provides you with basic information about the J-1 Exchange Program and contact information for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs which administers the program.
  • The Exchange Visitor "Rights and Responsibilities" brochure includes a basic description of your rights and responsibilities as an exchange visitor in the United. States.
  • For those exchange visitors who will be paid employees at PSU or elsewhere, the "Wilberforce Pamphlet on the Rights and Protections for Temporary Workers" provides important information about your rights as an employee in the U.S. (The Wilberforce Pamphlet is available in English and in many other languages.)

If you have questions about any of your rights and responsibilities, contact an International Scholar Advisor at the Office of International Affairs at PSU, or the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (see above).
