Extension of Program

J-1 scholars are expected to complete their programs by the end date on their DS-2019. If more time is needed to complete the program objective, then the host department can request an extension of program. J-1 program extensions can only be authorized for additional time needed to complete the original project or program objective. Extensions cannot be done for new projects or objectives. Extensions are limited to the amount of time allowed by the J-1 scholar category.

When to Apply

The program must be extended before the current DS-2019 end date. Extension requests are made by the host department and faculty sponsor on WorldLink. Departments and scholars are encouraged to make an extension request as soon as you know one is needed, but no later than two weeks before the current program end date on the DS-2019.

Extension Application

The host department administrator will make the extension request on WorldLink The scholar and faculty sponsor will also complete eforms as part of the process. Scholars should discuss the purpose and time needed to complete their program objectives with their faculty sponsor before beginning the extension application.

Extensions and Your Visa

Extension of your DS-2019 will extend the period of time you are allowed to stay in the United States. It does not extend the J-1 visa stamp in your passport. If you plan to travel after extending your program, you will need to apply for a new visa at a U.S. consulate. Consult an International Scholar Adviser at ISSS if you plan to travel after an extension.
