Preparing to Travel to PSU

Welcome to Portland State University! Here are a few things you need to do in preparation for your arrival in the United States and PSU:

Pre-Arrival Checklist

  • Read the "New J-1 Scholars" pages in this section of the web site and Life in Portland. You will find important and useful information about your J-1 program and living in Portland, Oregon.
  • You should also make yourself familiar with the requirements of the  J-1 Exchange Visitor Program and your Rights and Responsibilities
  • Make an appointment for a visa interview at a U.S. consulate. Complete all required application forms and fee payments as instructed.
  • Pay the SEVIS Fee. You must pay the SEVIS fee at least three business days in advance of your visa appointment.
  • Make your travel plans. Plan your arrival date to be within 30 days before your program start date. When purchasing tickets, be sure to allow time for visa processing. You may want to purchase a ticket that will let you change travel dates.
  • Make arrangements for your health insurance. You are required to have health insurance for yourself and any family members with you for the entire length of your stay. Be prepared to purchase your insurance as soon as you arrive at PSU.
  • Stay in contact with your host department and International Scholar Services. If you have any difficulties with your visa application, or if you are delayed and cannot arrive by your program start date, please notify your host department and ISSS as soon as possible.
