Who We Can Help

OUR CONFLICT CHECKS AND SCREENING:

Before scheduling, all appointment requests will be screened for various criteria to determine if the matter is something we can help with. Some of the things we consider:

Confirming student eligibility for our services
Confirming no PSU conflicts (for example, no related or opposing parties are PSU students, staff, or entities)
Confirming subject area is within our scope of practice
Confirming no conflict of interest

WHO WE CAN HELP

All Portland State University students are eligible so long as they:

Are enrolled for the current term and taking at least 1 credit
Are paying student fees

To get help over the summer term students need to be either:

Registered for summer term classes or
Have taken spring term classes and already registered for fall term classes

WHO WE CAN'T HELP

Student Legal Services cannot provide legal assistance or advice in the following cases:

Student vs. Student (Please visit the Dean of Student Life office for assistance.)
Student vs. P.S.U. Administration (Please visit the Equity and Compliance office for assistance.)
Student vs. P.S.U. faculty or staff (Please visit the Equity and Compliance office for assistance.)
P.S.U. staff members (even if taking classes under their benefits packages because they do not pay student fees)
P.C.C. co-enrolled students not paying P.S.U. student fees
Students not registered for the current term
Students with an issue that may involve a conflict under the professional ethics rules applicable to attorneys

Not eligible for SLS? View other local free and low-cost legal resources

At its discretion, SLS may decline to provide legal assistance in situations such as, including but not limited to, if the matter is beyond the scope of our services or capacity, involves a legal practice area outside of our expertise, and/or a conflict of interest.

AT THIS TIME, SLS IS NOT ABLE TO ASSIST WITH THE FOLLOWING MATTERS:

Tax Preparation
Workers Compensation
