Many PSU Geology majors come from regional community colleges. We have arrangements with most colleges to coordinate the coursework that you take before transferring to PSU. Depending on where you are in your academic career, see below for more information:

While attending community college:

  • Contact your advisor to coordinate coursework and the number of credits to meet your goals.
  • Visit PSU!
  • Find out if you know others that will be transferring to PSU, and exchange contact information. It’s helpful to have a friend when you arrive.
  • Apply for admission by April 1, 2024 to be eligible for 2024/25 PSU internal scholarships (you'll be automatically eligible for the Geology Transfer Scholarship)
  • Apply for other PSU Foundation scholarships at Scholarship Universe.
  • Apply for Geology-specific Scholarships. Make sure you understand the minimum course load (usually 12 credits per term), GPA, and other requirements of these scholarships.
  • Review the Geology Transfer Student Advising Guide

In the transfer process:

  • Check-in with your Geology advisor for the best information about Geology or Earth Science degree pathways.
  • Check-in with your pathway advisor for information about prerequisites and general education requirements, including University Studies. Incoming juniors (those with >90 transferable credits) will need to take three Junior Cluster classes and a Senior Capstone. Students with <90 credits will need to take one or more Sophomore Inquiry courses.
  • Consider reducing your work hours to accommodate the heavier workload at PSU. We have heard from many students that this is an important consideration.
  • Consider taking a moderate course load (~12 credits) during your first term at PSU. This will give you a chance to meet your Geology peers, learn about all of the resources and opportunities available to you at PSU, and start your University career with a successful first term.

Once you arrive:

  • Cramer Hall (CH) is a very confusing building, so visit before the term starts to find your classrooms.
  • Find the Geology student lounge in CH 59 and start a regular study group. It’s also a great spot for lunch and social time.
  • Visit your instructors during regularly scheduled office hours. Office hours are for you - use them!
  • Attend a geology club meeting like Coriba or AEG!
