Grad Programs: How To Apply

The deadline is Jan. 15 for Ph.D. and M.S. applications. Applicants to the Ph.D. and Thesis-based M.S. programs should contact a potential advisor prior to applying.

You may apply to the Professional Science Master's Program (M.S. in Applied Geosciences) anytime. We review PSM applications all year and there is no need to identify a potential advisor prior to applying.

For all applicants:

  • Meet the University Graduate Admission Requirements
  • Have a BS or BA Geology degree, or a closely related science. If you have a Bachelor’s degree in a science other than geology, please consult with your potential advisor about deficiencies you may need to make up. A list of requirements for our Bachelor’s in Geology can be found here.
  • Have completed introductory science and math courses. Specifically, we prefer 2 terms of calculus, 2 terms of physics (preferably calculus-based), and 2 terms of chemistry.  If you have not completed these classes, please consult with your potential advisor about deficiencies you may need to make up.
  • For certificate programs, we may accept the ASBOG Fundamentals exam in lieu of a Bachelor’s in Geology.
  • In Geology-related and Allied Science courses, we prefer a GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Field Camp: Although not a requirement for admission, completion of a field camp or field experience is required to graduate with a thesis-based MS degree.

Additional department requirements include:

  • Statement of purpose
  • Letters of recommendation (3)
  • Standardized test scores, e.g., GRE, not required but recommended
  • Resume or C.V.
