Prerequisites:

• 90 credits (junior standing) including: Math 211, 212 or 213, and Sped 418
• Admission into the major

The special education major at PSU requires an application and subsequent admission into the program.

Application Timeline

• The special education major admits on a yearly timeline for a fall term start:
• October: Applications open. Get started here!
• June 1: Priority application deadline
• August 1: Final application deadline
• May - August: Faculty and community partners review your application
• May - August: Admissions decisions communicated
• August: Meet with your academic advisor to plan degree requirements
• September: Special education major orientation

Education:

• Admitted PSU student. If you are transferring to PSU, apply to the university here
• Complete 90 credits by the program start date
• Complete required prerequisite courses (Math 211 and 212 or 213; Sped 418) with a C- or better. *** If you cannot complete all of the prerequisite courses, you may be able to fit them into your schedule during the program.
• Recommended 3.0 GPA

Materials:

• Application to the program submitted via tk20. **To begin an application the first time click “Admissions” then, “Click here to create your account”
• Résumé outlining your work and volunteer experience with youth and people with disabilities
• Completed experience chart, found in the application
• Statement of Purpose. Please limit your statement to 750 words total. Your statement should describe an experience you had with an individual with a disability. Please address the following areas:
  • What you believe the person you worked with gained from the experience
  • What you learned from the experience
  • Specific actions you took to promote an inclusive environment or what you would have done to make the experience more equitable for all learners, schools, and communities
• Two letters of recommendation submitted via the form in the application
