“Writers are the most important people in Hollywood. And we must never let them know it.” – Irving Thalberg

Screenwriters are the architects of our most-loved films, but they’re forgotten, downtrodden, and neglected. Let’s change that.
In this class, we’ll see how screenplays are written through a combination of script excerpts, clips, and discussion. We’ll analyze a wide range of films, including Pixar’s TIN TOY, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, and NOPE to explore core concepts like character and conflict and consider how individual scenes combine to form a feature film. We’ll compare written scripts to their filmed counterparts, learning how to watch movies as screenwriters. And finally, we’ll spend a little time discussing the business of screenwriting.
This 2-hour deep dive will be taught by Lars Steier, a Portland-based screenwriter and filmmaker. He has worked at the Sundance Institute and as an independent film producer. He holds an MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage from Northwestern University, where he also taught classes on screenwriting.

Class will be held in room LH115 in Lincoln Hall, at 1620 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 97201 on the Portland State University Campus.

PSU Students are free with valid student ID! Present ID at door for admission - no ticket needed.
