Dr. Bright Alozie is a Nigerian-born historian, educator, and storyteller. He is Associate Professor of Black Studies at Portland State University, where he also coordinates the African Studies Certificate Program and holds affiliate appointments in the Departments of History and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. His interdisciplinary research sits at the crossroads of colonial and postcolonial African history, the African diaspora, gender, memory, oral histories, methodologies, social movements, and decolonial thought.

Dedicated to recovering overlooked histories and centering African and diasporic voices, especially those long marginalized in academic discourse, Dr. Alozie brings scholarly precision and ethical imagination to his work. His acclaimed book, African Voices in Ink (2024), sheds light on the petition-writing practices of everyday people in colonial Igboland, Nigeria, offering fresh insight into African resistance, rights discourse, and decolonization. His ongoing projects, alongside numerous articles in leading academic journals, continue this commitment to accessible, community-grounded, and socially engaged scholarship. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships and research grants, including those from the North Atlantic Conference on British Studies Diversity and Inclusion Fellowship, the Hayek Fund for Scholars, the Charlton Oral History Research Grant, the Hagley Oral History Project Grant and Fellowship, and the African Humanities Program. His teaching has earned multiple awards, including Annual John Eliot Allen Outstanding Teaching Awards, the Peggy Renner Award for Teaching and Curricular Innovation, and honors for feminist research, leadership, and mentorship.

In both his research and teaching, Dr. Alozie brings creative depth, intellectual generosity, and a contagious passion for African history. Known for his infectious enthusiasm, critical rigor, and Ubuntu-inspired teaching mentorship, Dr. Alozie invites students and collaborators to reimagine Africa’s past, present, and futures with empathy, imagination, and justice.
