Among the piano's most ambitious and satisfying works to experience, Ives's "Concord" Sonata pays homage to four giants of American Transcendentalism — Emerson, Hawthorne, Alcott, and Thoreau — with music ranging from pastoral hymns to raucous ragtime. Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit transports us to a shadowy world of nymphs and goblins, making it the perfect companion to Robert Schumann's Forest Scenes, which beckons listeners to embark on a journey both serene and sinister.
