Marie Fernstrom received her BS degree in Recreational Management from Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1990. After completing her BS, she pursued her certification as an American Sign Language teacher and received her national certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) in 1995. She taught American Sign Language at BYU from 1988-1999 then moved to Oregon and began teaching at Portland Community College (since 1999) and Portland State University (since 2003). She is currently a member of the American Sign Language Teachers Association, National Association of the Deaf and NW ASLTA. She was the Director for BYU’s conferences and workshops-- “Hearing Parents of Deaf Children,” staff member for “Camp Liahona’s Silent Weekend,” and a presenter for BYU’s conferences for “Hearing Parents of Deaf Children.” She taught religion to the Deaf at Springville High School in Utah and was a religion teacher for the Deaf in New York City for two years.
