SWEA Portland Scholarships

1. These scholarships support students from the Northwestern United States looking to promote and raise awareness of Swedish culture and traditions.

Available To: Undergraduate
Number of Awards: Varies
Amount: $1,000-$2,000

Criteria

You must meet the following requirements:

  • Live in the Pacific Northwest or be doing your study or project in the Pacific Northwest
  • Have a study abroad program, research project or other activity that you believe will advance and share knowledge of Swedish culture traditions, language, art, history or society
  • Account for scholarship funds at the end of the year
  • Commit to providing a report to SWEA Portland on how the award was used, either in writing or by giving a small presentation

SWEA members and their families are not eligible to apply.

Application

Your application must contain the following materials:

  • Short summary of who you are and why you are seeking a scholarship. Provide a detailed description of how the scholarship will be used with demonstrated interest in furthering Swedish culture and tradition.

2. Sponsor: Swedish Women's Educational Association Portland
Title: Scholarship for Research in the Swedish Language, Literature, and/or Area Studies for the year 2024
Available To: Applicants for SWEA International's scholarship for research into the Swedish language, literature and society must be a well-qualified doctoral student who studies at a university outside Sweden and is a permanent resident abroad.
Amount: $15,000

Criteria

You must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants for SWEA International's scholarship for research into the Swedish language, literature and society must be a well-qualified doctoral student who studies at a university outside Sweden and is a permanent resident abroad.
  • It is very important that the applicant has registered his / her subject for the doctoral dissertation and is in the final stages of his / her doctoral studies. The scholarship will help to complete the dissertation.
  • There is no discrimination based on race, gender, age, religion, nationality or the like.
  • Good knowledge of the Swedish language, both in writing and in speech, is required.
  • The applicant should be positive about SWEA International's goals and activities, and be willing to give lectures for SWEA members both in Sweden and abroad. The SWEA departments that invite the research fellow to speak are responsible for all travel expenses.

  • A detailed description of the topic of the doctoral dissertation.
  • Suggestions for how any scholarship should be used.
  • A short presentation of you as a person in Swedish.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Other appendices.
