New Student Orientation is required for new, fully-admitted undergraduate students. The Orientation program is designed to help new students learn about graduation requirements, register for classes, and transition successfully into the PSU community. New students are expected to complete orientation prior to the term for which they have been admitted. If you are unsure whether or not you are required to complete orientation based on your student type, refer to Student Type Definitions.
To satisfy the orientation requirement, you must participate in the entire session. Students who arrive late or leave early will need to schedule a different orientation option. We also understand that events beyond your control might impact your ability to participate in your scheduled orientation session; please contact our office to discuss options as soon as you are able.
Applying Orientation Completion to Future Terms
If you have updated your term of admission and completed a prior Orientation program, you are able to apply orientation completion for up to two (2) years. For instance, if you completed Orientation for fall term 2013, this completion would apply through Orientation for fall term 2015, but not beyond.
For the majority of Orientation programs, the matriculation fee (that students pay as part of their tuition for their first term) covers the cost of attendance. Some programs require additional fees to cover the cost of materials, staffing, space, and food. Please note that if you are paying a program fee within five (5) business days of the program that you will not be eligible for a refund.
If you have paid to attend an Orientation program, you are eligible for a full refund if you e-mail the Orientation office prior to five (5) business days before your scheduled session. In this message, be sure to include the student’s name and ID number, the name(s) of the individuals that are cancelling, mailing address, and the reason for this cancellation.
Properly requested and approved refunds will be processed within 10 business days and the purchase amount will be refunded to your original method of payment, such as the credit card used for the order. If the refund is applied to your credit card, your credit card company will have it's own processing time to post the refund to your account which can vary depending on the company.
Math Placement Requirement Prior to Signing Up for an Orientation Session
In an effort to provide a better advising and registration process at Orientation, many students are required to take the Math Placement exam prior to being eligible to sign up for Orientation. If your major is listed on the Math Placement Information webpage, or you have not taken a college level math course within the last year, you are REQUIRED to take the math placement prior to signing up for an orientation session.
