Dr. Mark L. Berrettini is a Professor of Film Studies in the School of Film, where he has taught since 2007. While at Portland State University, he has taught numerous courses in film analysis, history, and theory, has supervised nine undergraduate thesis projects, and served as an interim associate dean for the College of the Arts and as the director of the School of Film. He has published ten essays in peer-reviewed journals, such as Camera Obscura and Cinema Journal, and in the book collections The Last Western: Deadwood and the End of American Empire (Bloomsbury Academic, 2013), US Independent Film after 1989: Possible Films, (Edinburgh University Press, 2015), and The Cinema of Hal Hartley: Flirting with Formalism (Wallflower/Columbia University Press, 2017). His book Hal Hartley (2011) is included the Contemporary Film Directors series published by the University of Illinois Press. He holds a PhD from the University of Rochester, and a BA cum laude in Film, Television & Theatre from the University of Notre Dame.
