So grab some popcorn and get with the program. You can have your mic/camera on or off, whatever you’re comfortable with! This weekend’s films are a part of Kurtis’s “Theatrical Arthouse” series which explores films that are heavily steeped in or overlap with theatrical tradition in ways that are more overt than what can be found in other films. Women on The Verge of A Nervous Breakdown is the film that brought Pedro Almodóvar widespread international acclaim in 1988. His work is often categorized as dark comedy, but also retains many qualities of traditional melodrama and American “women’s pictures.” It stars Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, and Julieta Serrano, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It has also since been adapted into a musical for the stage. Opening Night is a 1977 psychological drama by John Cassavetes that follows Gena Rowlands as an aging stage actress coping with her deteriorating mental health by binge drinking in anticipation of the opening of a broadway play she’s set to star in.The film was not picked up for American distribution until 1991, two years after Cassavetes’ death. It co-stars Ben Gazzara, Joan Blondell, Paul Stewart, Zohra Lampert, and Cassavetes himself. Its plot was also the inspiration for one of Almodóvar’s other films, All About My Mother (1999).
