Calendar German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder directed approximately forty films in less than fifteen years, bursting on the scene with LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH in 1969 and overdosing on cocaine and barbiturates before the release of QUERELLE, his last film, in 1982.This class will offer a survey of Fassbinder’s biography and filmography, concentrating on three core periods: his first ten films, his Sirkian melodramas, and his late critique of post-War German history. It will also explore his relationship to New German Cinema, his critique of German society, and the role exploitation played in his filmography and his personal life. Students will hopefully walk away with the groundwork for deeper explorations into his expansive body of work. This 2-hour deep dive will be taught by Jordan Sudermann who teaches at Lincoln High School. His interests in film include post-war European art cinema, East Asian cinemas, and queer cinemas. Previous courses at Movie Madness University include Japanese New Wave, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Youth in Revolt, and Cinema Novo & Beyond.Class will be held in room LH115 in Lincoln Hall, at 1620 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 97201 on the Portland State University Campus.PSU Students are free with valid student ID!
