Movie Madness University at PSU Presents "Reel Chicano: A Journey Through Chicano Cinema Past, Present, and Future"

Chicano Cinema explores the Mexican American experience through films that examine cultural identity, social justice, political and economic struggles, and resistance to mainstream stereotypes.

Rooted in the Chicano Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s-70s, this course traces the evolution of Chicano filmmaking while highlighting stories set in the American Southwest and the complexities of navigating dual cultural identities.

In this 2-hour deep dive, we’ll examine how Chicano filmmakers have used cinema to challenge dominant media narratives, preserve cultural heritage, and expand representation in American film.

This class will be taught by assistant MMU instructor and Chicano studies advocate Michael Lampkin whose past courses at MMU includes Negotiating Citizenship: Satirical Representations of Immigration and Chicano Identity in Born in East L.A. and Zoot Suit: Exploring Chicano Cultural Identity and Self-Representation on Film.

Class will be held in room LH115 in Lincoln Hall, at 1620 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 97201 on the Portland State University Campus.
