Values

As part of PSU’s Time to Act: Plan for Equity and Racial Justice to foster and sustain an equitable and just university experience for all, Maseeh College is firmly committed to social equity and expanding social mobility for our students and the communities we serve. We offer an open and safe educational environment, and we welcome and encourage diversity in people and ideas. Maseeh College places great value on being an access university, serving nontraditional and underserved communities, one that provides opportunities for learning outside of the classroom and supports diverse students on their paths to becoming STEM innovators. Our graduates are remarkably resilient, academically advanced, and socially-aware lifelong learners. Maseeh faculty and student research is characterized by engagement with the engineering community, service to the regional economy, and collaborative partnerships. These shared values are the foundation of our vision and underlie all that we do as a Maseeh College community. As we strive for excellence in all aspects of our mission, we choose to do so with honesty, transparency, integrity, and with respect for others and the value of their contributions.

Equity and Non-discrimination

Maseeh College is committed to equity as the foundation for PSU’s excellence, ensuring that everyone has access to the opportunities necessary to satisfy essential needs, advance their well-being, and achieve their full potential. Our aim is to address and redress the roots of inequities, including but not limited to racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism, classism, and the intersections of these inequities.

In particular, discrimination or harassment on the basis of age, disability, national origin, race, color, marital status, veteran status, religion, sex, sexual orientation, genetic information, or in the use of Worker's Compensation, Federal Family Medical Leave Act, or the Oregon Medical Leave Act is strictly prohibited by PSU Prohibited Discrimination & Harassment Policy and is unlawful. Maseeh College offers a feedback form to help capture information from students, faculty, and staff regarding the diversity, equity, and inclusion matters that influence the college climate.

Our Land & Legacies

Portland State University and the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science are located in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon. We honor the Indigenous people whose traditional and ancestral homelands we stand on, the Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Tumwater, Watlala bands of the Chinook, the Tualatin Kalapuya and many other indigenous nations of the Columbia River. We acknowledge the ancestors of this land and recognize that we are here because of the sacrifices forced upon them. In remembering these communities, we honor their legacy, their lives, and their descendants.

Maseeh College Outreach

Maseeh College students come to us from a vibrant and diverse community, and we are home to many innovative programs that contribute to an inclusive STEM ecosystem.

Pathways from K-12 & Community

  • Oregon MESA is a statewide K-12 based invention and engineering program for underrepresented students.
  • Portland Metro STEM Partnership (PMSP) is a regional cross-sector collaboration with a shared goal of transforming STEM education for PK-12 students and beyond.

Maseeh-led Student Success Programs

Student-led Inclusion

  • American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) is a national, nonprofit organization focused on substantially increasing the representation of American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, First Nations, and other indigenous peoples of North America in STEM.
  • National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) student chapter at PSU seeks to support the mission of NSBE nationally to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
  • Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHE) works toward improving the diversity of the STEM field. The local chapter hopes to increase involvement and retention of Hispanic and other underrepresented groups in all STEM majors, with an emphasis on engineering and computer science.
  • Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a non-profit, educational service organization of graduate engineers, women, and men, dedicated to the advancement of women in the engineering professions. The local chapter helps students make contacts, cultivate friendships, and network with local engineering professionals.
  • We in Computer Science (WCS) celebrates diversity and provides networking and support to communities historically underrepresented in Computer Science including LGBTQIA+ people, women, gender non-conforming, first-generation immigrants, people of color, and disabled people.
