Update on Federal Troops and PSU’s Dedication to a Safe Campus

Dear Campus Community,

Yesterday afternoon, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling that the Trump Administration can deploy National Guard troops to Oregon. It is not clear whether this decision will result in immediate action, but I want to assure everyone that Portland State remains committed to a safe and welcoming campus environment.

We don’t yet know whether yesterday’s court decision will result in the deployment of National Guard troops in Portland. We remain in contact with our partners at the city and in Salem to ensure that we have the latest information and it is our understanding that any troops that are dispatched would be centered at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility which is about two miles from campus.

I am heartened that our Governor, Attorney General and Mayor remain steadfast in their opposition to federal troops on the ground. They will continue to pursue legal action to prevent troop deployment and we are united in working together to protect our communities and our democracy.

PSU remains a sanctuary campus, in a sanctuary city in a sanctuary state — our Campus Public Safety Officers will not collaborate with ICE officers. To learn more about what it means that PSU is a Sanctuary Campus, visit this information page. Please know there are resources available for students and employees who need help.

As always, please continue to look out for each other. Thank you for everything you do to keep our PSU community strong!

Sincerely,

Ann Cudd
PSU President
