Message from President Cudd Regarding Campus Open on May 2

Dear Campus Community,

Portland State University will be open on Thursday, May 2, 2024. It is critically important to return to the university’s mission of educating our students, despite the ongoing protest at the Branford Price Millar Library.

All buildings will be accessible to anyone with PSU ID card access. There are two exceptions to normal operating hours: Fariborz Maseeh Hall (FMH) and Smith Memorial Student Union (SMU) will be open from 8 AM to 8 PM.

Staff should consult with their supervisor if they feel that the ongoing activity at the library affects their ability to work on campus. Students who have scheduled in-person classes should reach out to their instructors if they feel uncomfortable coming to campus.

The Campus Public Safety Office will continue to patrol campus and any member of our community who may feel unsafe can request a CPSO escort anywhere on campus by calling 503-725-4407. PSU also offers mental health services through the Center for Student Health and Counseling and the Employee Assistance Program.

But more than just sharing links to resources, I’m asking that everyone on our campus look out for one another. We have all been affected by the trauma of the last couple of days in one way or another. We all want peace.

Finally, I need to be clear about the status of the Millar Library. Our library is closed. No one is authorized to be in the library. This includes all PSU faculty, staff and students. Anyone still in the library is committing criminal trespass, and must leave immediately. Portland State University is cooperating with law enforcement on this matter.

Sincerely,
Ann Cudd
PSU President
