Memorial Screening of Elaine Velazquez's Gaining Ground

The Oregon Historical Society + PSU School of Film presents a memorial screening of Gaining Ground (2016) - directed, edited and shot by Portland filmmaker Elaine Velazquez, who passed away in August 2025. From farms in the fertile Willamette Valley to the marginalized food desert of Richmond, CA, Gaining Ground shows how growing healthy food is a catalyst for igniting hope and empowerment in rural and urban communities. The film portrays urban grassroots community organizers and small family farmers challenging the industrial food complex by working to rebuild local sustainable food systems that feed their communities.
