Redefining Multicultural Families in South Korea

Please join the Institute for Asian Studies for a lecture by Minjeong Kim of San Diego University "Redefining Multicultural Families in South Korea."

From the inception, the South Korean government's policies for marriage immigrants and "multicultural families" have received much criticism from scholars and activists. In this talk, Minjeong Kim examines contemporary immigrants and their families in Korea as well as the government's immigrant-related policies, with focus on gender politics. By doing so, Kim's talk extends the critical discourse by reexamining the meanings of "multiculturalism" and proposes new directions to reinvigorate contemporary discussions about multicultural families.

Minjeong Kim is Associate Professor and Department Chair of Sociology as well as the Director of the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies at San Diego University. She is author of Elusive Belonging: Marriage, Immigrants and "Multiculturalism" in Rural South Korea.
