Urban Studies Program Student Learning Outcomes

1. Advanced Knowledge: Urban Studies students will have and be able to apply advanced knowledge in urban theory, including domain knowledge within two field areas.

  • Have and apply knowledge about diverse histories of urban thought; dynamics of urbanization and urban spatial structure; and applications of social and political theory to urban context.
  • Have and apply domain knowledge within one defined Urban Studies field area; and within a second, student-defined field.

2. Methods: Urban Studies students will have and be able to apply skills in appropriate methods of analysis, whether quantitative, qualitative, or both, to collect and integrate information.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of qualitative research methodologies, analysis skills, and technologies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of quantitative methodologies and mastery of analysis skills and statistical software for data analysis and presentation.
  • Learn and apply advanced methodologies as appropriate for the student’s research interests.

3. Research: Urban Studies students will conduct research that results in an original contribution to knowledge, in conformity with all standards for responsible conduct of research.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of social science research approaches and traditions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of social science research ethics, including awareness of their own positionality as a researcher.
  • Demonstrate ability to synthesize scholarly literature and identify relevant gaps and opportunities for research intervention.
  • Demonstrate ability to design and implement a cohesive, theoretically-informed research program to contribute to scholarly knowledge in urban studies.

4. Communication: Urban Studies students will have and apply skills in scholarly communication, applied in oral, text, and digital formats, sufficient to publish and present work in their scholarly field, prepare grant proposals, and communicate results to relevant public audiences.


5. Professionalism: Urban Studies students will engage with the structure of the field and their intended career placement as academics and/or professionals, including the legal and ethical dimensions of these professions and the responsibilities involved to a variety of stakeholders.
