With sexual violence on college campuses once again in the news, I want to reflect on the promise of a campus community. A university’s promise is that every person has the opportunity to learn, contribute, and build a future. Fulfilling that promise requires a community where safety, dignity, and respect are reflected in our everyday actions.
Sexual harassment and violence undermine that promise. At PSU, we share a responsibility to respect personal boundaries, support those affected by harm, and ensure that seeking help is met with care.
I want to remind everyone that students and employees can turn to the Office of Equity, Audit, and Compliance (OEAC) to understand available resources and university processes, whether a concern arises on or off campus. Seeking support does not require an individual to make a decision about pursuing an investigation or making a police report.
Resources include:
- OEAC and Title IX: Contact titleixcoordinator@pdx.edu to learn about reporting options, university processes, and assistance connecting with support. OEAC handles information with care and shares it only as needed to respond to concerns and to meet university obligations. The office also offers training including bystander intervention for individuals or groups.
- PSU Confidential Advocacy: Students can access confidential support and assistance navigating academic or housing needs. Email advocacy@pdx.edu, call 503-725-6994, or schedule an appointment.
- Student Health and Counseling (SHAC): Students can access counseling and medical support at 503-725-2800 or through SHAC’s website.
- Call to Safety: Free, confidential support for anyone affected by sexual violence is available 24/7 at 503-235-5333 or 888-235-5333.
Our commitment becomes meaningful through action: listening without judgment, honoring others’ choices, protecting privacy, and seeking assistance when we see concerning behavior.
Together, we can strengthen a campus where every person is supported in pursuing the future they came here to build.
