Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science faculty member receives the 2021 CAREER award from NSF. The NSF CAREER award is the most prestigious award in support of early-career faculty. The five-year grant supports early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to help lead advances in the mission of their department and organization.

John Lipor is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His NSF CAREER award, Leveraging Signal Structure for Cost-Sensitive Adaptive Sampling, aims to reduce the cost of environmental sensing by designing and analyzing novel algorithms for adaptive sampling. These algorithms will enable practitioners to rapidly discover important environmental features while minimizing the cost of sampling using devices such as drones or autonomous underwater vehicles. Further, this research will support education and diversity through the development of curriculum for a high school course on unmanned aerial vehicles as well as a citizen science campaign that leverages adaptive sampling to benefit Portland's Forest Park.
