Jin Zhang, Senior Director, Production Management, Synopsys Inc.
1. In layman’s terms, what does your field of engineers/computer scientists do?
We design Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software used by semiconductor companies designing IC chips.
2. What is your background?
I grew up in China and came to the US for my Ph.D. in 1994. I have been working in the semiconductor industry since 1995. I started doing technical work in my career in several startup companies and later transitioned into business and product management.
3. What was your educational path?
I earned 6 degrees (2 Bachelor, 3 Master, 1 Ph.D). I got my BS/BA/MS in China majoring in Electrical Engineering (EE) and English. At PSU, I majored in ECE and got my Ph.D. in 2006. I also got a MBA degree from PSU in 2010.
4. Why did you choose Maseeh College at PSU?
When I was applying to graduate programs in the US, I found professors at PSU aligned with my research interest. Portland is a beautiful city on the West Coast.
5. What was your favorite aspect/experience/moment/class/professor at Maseeh College?
I loved my classes with Dr. Jeske and Dr. Perkowski. I enjoyed doing research in logic synthesis and verification. I appreciated the scholarship I received from Dr. Maseeh.
6. Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for current Maseeh College students?
PSU and Maseeh College teach you practical skills needed in the industry. Curiosity and continuous learning are key to your success. Reach out to your alumni and ask for help. We are very willing to promote PSU's programs and students in the industry.
7. Do you have any advice for high students/young people/aspiring engineers or computer scientists?
Don't be afraid of challenges and setbacks when pursuing this career path. Engineers and computer scientists are changing the world. It is a great feeling that your work contributed to the improvement of our society.
8. How did Maseeh College help you prepare for your career?
I found a job easily while pursuing my Ph.D. degree due to the practical skills I learned at PSU. All the professors and resources at PSU were a huge asset that helped prepare me for where I am today.
9. Please share any career highlights, awards/recognition you've received and/or accomplishments you're most proud of.
The IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design Donald O. Pederson Best Paper Award; Success in Driving Formal Verification Growth and Adoption in the Industry; Setting on Wholly Owned Subsidiary in China for a French Startup Company.
10. What are you most hopeful about in terms of engineering/computer science and/or engineering/computer science future innovations in your field?
Generative AI is poised to transform how people design, verify, and implement silicon chips.
