Do you prefer a guided group experience or more independence to explore university life abroad? Understanding program models can help you choose an experience that fits your academic goals, interests, budget, and schedule.
Structure includes organized coursework, activities, and group arrangements. Support includes the people and resources available to help you. A more independent program can still offer support. What’s available varies by program.
Ways to Study Abroad
PSU offers three broad pathways, with different opportunities for structure and independence:
- Faculty-Led Programs: Travel and learn with PSU faculty and fellow students through a short-term, course-based program.
- Exchange & Direct Enroll Programs: Take courses at a host university alongside local and international students while remaining enrolled at PSU.
- Third-Party Provider Programs: Study through a partner organization that provides academic programming, housing, and on-site support.
Exchange and third-party provider programs may offer different program models, including Hybrid, Fully Integrated, Island, and Internships Abroad.
Compare Structure and Independence
Use the comparison below as a starting point. Faculty-led and Island programs generally offer more organized experiences. Hybrid programs combine structure with independence, while Fully Integrated programs typically require more independence. Internship arrangements vary by program and placement.

|---|
| Faculty-Led | More structured: Typically 1–8 weeks of course-based learning with PSU faculty and a student cohort. | Want a guided academic experience with PSU faculty and fellow students. |
| Island | More structured: Study center coursework with organized programming, on-site support, and opportunities for local engagement. | Prefer a structured learning environment while exploring life abroad. |
| Hybrid | A balance of structure and independence: University coursework combined with study center resources and support. | Want to experience university life abroad while maintaining a connection to an organized program. |
| Fully Integrated | More independent: Courses alongside local and international students at a host university, with greater responsibility for navigating daily life. | Feel comfortable taking initiative and want to immerse yourself in university life abroad. |
| Internships Abroad | Structure varies: Part-time or full-time professional placements, with arrangements and support depending on the program. | Want international work experience that connects academic learning with career goals. |
| Group Travel (Non-Credit Bearing) | More structured: Short-term, PSU faculty- or staff-led group travel without academic credit. | Want an organized cultural, educational, or professional experience without enrolling in coursework. |
