2018 Student Speaker Application & Selection Process

Address Your Peers as a Student Speaker at Commencement!

Applications to be a Student Speaker at our 2018 commencement ceremonies are now available. The information and application provided below are for the following ceremonies:

  • Saturday, June 16 - School of Business at the Viking Pavilion
  • Sunday, June 17 – College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Professional Schools & Colleges* at Moda Center

Students interested in being a student speaker for the Graduate School of Education ceremony on Friday, June 15 at the Viking Pavilion, please email gseinfo@pdx.edu for more information on their separate selection process.

**Professional Schools & Colleges include: College of The Arts, College of Urban & Public Affairs, OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, Maseeh College of Engineering & Computer Science, School of Social Work

Application Process

Applications will be reviewed by the Graduation Program Board. Selected applicants will be invited to present their speech in an audition in front of the Board in early May. Two speakers for each commencement ceremony will be selected by Friday, May 11th, 2018.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be a graduating student eligible to participate in the 2018 Spring Ceremony
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the Undergraduate level and 3.5 for Graduate students
  • Submit a complete application package by 5:00pm on Friday, April 13th, 2018.
  • If invited, must present the proposed 2 minute speech to the Graduation Program Board on either Monday, May 7th from 1-2:30pm or Tuesday, May 8th from 10:30am-12pm (finalists must be available during these dates and times).

2018 Selection Timeline

  • Thursday, March 1st – Application available
  • Friday, April 13th – Applications due at 5pm
  • Friday, April 27th – Finalists invited to present to the Graduation Program Board
  • Monday, May 7th and Tuesday, May 8th – Presentations
  • Friday, May 11th – Student speakers selected
