Former state legislator Akasha Lawrence-Spence used her journey at PSU to study how policy impacts everyday life. Her research into alternative housing systems led her to co-organize a 2025 study trip to analyze Vienna’s social housing, bringing real-world policy solutions to the city of Portland.

Unlocking the Secrets of Planetary Formation in Microgravity

Nadeem Sadek '26 utilized the Maseeh College drop tower to conduct groundbreaking mechanical engineering research. By smashing simulated planetary bodies under microgravity conditions, his lab research explores how celestial masses form and how fluid droplets behave, aiding volcanic ash and spacecraft safety.

Shelby Morgan

Connecting Ancient Artifacts to Contemporary Italian Art

Honors College graduate Shelby Morgan '26 balanced a breast cancer diagnosis with rigorous research into the ancient past. Her award-winning art history thesis connects newly discovered Etruscan artifacts to contemporary Italian art — research she will continue in Rome next fall.

At Portland State, honorary degrees are more than a tradition — they’re a tribute to those who’ve inspired through intellect, artistry or public service. PSU is proud to announce Antone Minthorn and Michael C. Alexander as the recipients of its 2026 honorary doctoral degrees. Conferred during this June’s commencement ceremonies, the university’s highest honor recognizes these two transformational Pacific Northwest leaders for their lifetimes of public service, advocacy and dedication to regional stewardship.
