Originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, Anna Alsufieva earned her Ph.D. in Language Teaching Pedagogy (2001), at Herzen State Pedagogical University, St. Petersburg, Russia. She has taught Russian language at Herzen University (1994-2003); the Middlebury Russian School (2002-2005); the University of Texas, Austin (2002-2003), and Reed College (1999-2001 and 2003-2009).

She teaches Russian in the major, advanced Russian, Russian history, and 20th-century Russian literature. Prof. Alsufieva's research focuses on Russian grammar and syntax, stylistics and socio-linguistics, and methodology and the practice of teaching Russian at the different levels.
