Physics Graduate Programs at PSU

As a graduate student you will engage in coursework and research ranging from nanotechnology and materials science to biophysics and environmental extremes.

Graduate Application Procedure

The application deadline for Fall 2023 admission was January 15, 2023. The application portal for Fall 2024 will open October 2023.

How to Apply

To apply for a program in Physics, please visit the Graduate Admissions page and click on the link "Apply to PSU" and follow the steps to apply as a graduate student. 

Note: International Students should visit the Admissions page for International Graduate Students 

Once you’ve created an account, you will be asked to provide the following information:

  • Name, contact information, and some personal details
  • Choice of program. Under the 'College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' choose Applied Physics, PhD; Physics, MA; or Physics, MS and select term
  • Degree information and transcripts from all institutions at which you have studied. You will be asked to upload a scan (an unofficial copy) of transcripts from each institution you have attended. See Office of Graduate Studies for what an acceptable unofficial transcript is. If you are admitted, you will then be required to submit official transcripts from all institutions attended, regardless of the number of credits earned. International applicants will be asked to submit official translations of their transcripts
  • Residency information (used to determine tuition charges)
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Any further documentation as required by Portland State University
  • GREs are not required
