She is a 4 term USENIX.org Board member, IEEE Standards Association Open Source Committee (OSCom) member, 2x Jury member Falling-Walls.com, and judge for the 2018 UNESCO Hackathon.

Richard Beckwith

Richard’s expertise is in AI and Society, Autonomous Driving, and Natural Language Processing (NLP). He received his PhD from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1986. From 1986 to 1991 he was a research scientist at Princeton University’s Cognitive Science Lab, working on WordNet. From 1991 until going to Intel in 1996, he was a Research Faculty member at Northwestern University in the Institute for the Learning Sciences.

Kathy Berg

Kate Burns

Before joining MetroLab in January 2022, Kate was a Senior Associate at Cityfi, a firm focused on fostering innovation and new thinking in the urban environment. Previously, Kate was a part of two mayoral administrations: she was the Technology Policy Advisor for Mayor Jenny Durkan in Seattle, WA and the Innovation Policy Advisor for Mayor Sly James in Kansas City, MO. These roles shared similar missions and values, including drafting new regulatory schemas for transportation networks and short-term rentals, and implementing and promoting privacy and surveillance regulations. Kate was a part of the MetroLab network while in Seattle and Kansas City and continues to hold a passion for the work between cities and universities. She has a juris doctorate from the University of Missouri Kansas City and a B.S. in Journalism from the University of Kansas.

David DeVos

David oversees LaSalle’s global ESG strategy and objectives, while driving program execution in partnership with the firm’s regional Sustainability Officers, senior leadership and portfolio stakeholders. Prior to joining LaSalle, David worked for PGIM Real Estate as the firm's Chief Sustainability Officer where he led efforts to secure numerous sustainability achievements and designations across a wide-ranging, diversified portfolio. Previously, he was a Co-Founder at Ecoxera, Director of Corporate Sustainability at Kohl's, and a VP of Store Design and Construction at Follett Higher Education Group. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and Montclair State University’s Institute for Sustainable Studies, the Urban Land Institute’s Responsible Property Investment Council, the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark’s Benchmark Committee and the American Institute of Architects. He has an MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management and degrees in architecture and environmental design from the University of Minnesota.

Damien Francaviglia

Damien has a B.A. in Anthropology from The Ohio State University and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from University of Oregon.

Jason Franklin

Jason Franklin, AICP, is the Director of Campus Planning and Design at PSU and manages the Campus Planning Office. He also is an adjunct faculty in the Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies & Planning where he teaches Project Management for Planners. Prior to joining PSU, Jason worked as a planning consultant in Portland. He has managed campus master plans, comprehensive plan updates, transportation system plans, parking plans and natural resources plans. Jason received a master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from PSU and a bachelor’s in accounting from the University of Minnesota.

Antonie Jetter

Antonie was on the founding team of a venture-backed start-up company in equipment manufacturing, an experience that ultimately led her to pursue a PhD in Technology and Innovation Management from RWTH Technical University, Germany. Antonie teaches courses on new product development, entrepreneurship, and technology marketing. Her research interests are new product development, managerial cognition, and decision making. Antonie’s research involves users, community members, and other stakeholders through participatory modeling with Fuzzy Cognitive Maps.

Margaret Kirkpatrick

Previously, Margaret served as Senior VP and General Counsel at NW Natural as well as Senior VP of Environmental Affairs. She was also a partner with Stoel Rives, LLP. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Portland State University, and on the boards of the Oregon Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, The Classroom Law Project and The Children’s Institute. Margaret has a bachelor’s from the College of Wooster, a JD from Lewis & Clark College, and an LLM from the University of Edinburgh.

Kevin Martin

Kevin leads the City of Portland’s Smart City PDX team. He has in-depth experience developing, implementing and managing systems and applications to improve delivery of services, increase community involvement in City projects, and to support Portland’s long-range planning. Kevin manages a diverse team of Smart Cities and Open Data coordinators, web developers, web designers, graphic designers, database administrators, GIS analysts, and an air quality scientist. He has a master’s in geography from Portland State University.

Michael Mattmiller

Michael served as the City of Seattle’s Chief Technology Officer, leading the creation of the consolidated information technology department, the modernization of data centers, and migration to Office 365. Michael expanded the digital skills education program, started Seattle’s Smart Cities initiative, and led a broadband program that increased availability of gigabit broadband service throughout the city. Previously, Michael was a Senior Strategist at Microsoft focused on data privacy and protection and a consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers where he helped federal agencies secure and manage their technology investments. He is a graduate of The George Washington University.

Rob Melnick

Rob served as executive director/executive dean of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability and of the School of Sustainability. Rob also holds academic appointments as research scientist in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability and as affiliated faculty in ASU’s School of Public Affairs. Prior to ASU, Rob was a senior fellow and VP of the Hudson Institute. He has worked with numerous mayors and city council on public policy issues and program evaluations. Rob has a bachelor’s from Dartmouth College and master's and PhD degrees from ASU.

John Metras

He has played an integral role in helping UBC evolve into a global leader in sustainability, working on a wide range of initiatives including the Campus as a Living Lab program, the 20-Year Sustainability Strategy, and LEED-certified building projects.  John has a BS in Engineering Science from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from UBC.

Skip Newberry

Before joining the TAO, Skip served as an economic development policy advisor to Portland Mayor Sam Adams, where he helped create Portland’s first comprehensive economic development strategy in 16 years, recognizing software as a key industry cluster. While at the City of Portland, Skip’s projects included the adoption of the nation’s first open source software procurement policy at the municipal level, an award-winning regional open data initiative and the development of resources to support entrepreneurship. Previously, Skip was a corporate and IP attorney and entrepreneur. He is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of Technology Councils of North America (TECNA) and serves on the community advisory board for Wells Fargo and several community-based organizations in the Portland area. Skip holds a bachelor’s degree from Colby College and a JD from the University of Connecticut School of Law.

Murat Omay

Murat is a senior transportation professional with an extensive network in the transportation technology innovation and research, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), public transportation, and mobility integration domains. He has a vision of a well-balanced mobility system that is not over-integrated, accessible by all, supportive of spontaneous travel decisions, and user-centric rather than user-focused. Currently, Murat serves as a Senior Program Manager at the Mobility Innovation Office of USDOT-FTA, leading the efforts for development of strategies to integrate innovative, technology-based, and partnership-based solutions into mobility and transit. Prior to joining the FTA, Murat served as a Principal Transportation Research Scientist at the Battelle Memorial Institute. Murat holds graduate degrees in Sustainable Transportation from University of Washington, and Transport Engineering and Planning from Edinburgh Napier University.

Amy Parker

Assistant Professor in Special Education and Coordinator of the Orientation and Mobility Program

Amy holds a doctorate in special education with an emphasis in deafblindness. She also holds a certification in orientation and mobility through a leadership and enrichment fellowship funded by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education. She has worked to design accessible multimedia learning modules for national technical assistance and personnel preparation. Her research interests include orientation and mobility for individuals with complex disabilities, communication interventions, participatory action research with people with disabilities and their families, and community-based partnerships to create social change.
