Dr. Linda M. Johnston will feature as the keynote speaker. Dr. Linda M. Johnston is Professor Emerita from Kennesaw State University in Georgia.  She was the Executive Director of the Siegel Institute for Leadership, Ethics, and Character and a Professor of Conflict Management. She previously taught at George Mason University’s Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution and Antioch University McGregor (Antioch Midwest). Her research interests include sports-related conflicts, ethics, bullying, health-related conflict, narrative and discourse theory, and world view theory. She is a trained mediator, negotiator, ombuds, and facilitator.  She works both domestically and internationally. She has received grants from the Southern Poverty Law Center and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others.  She had a Fellowship to begin a dialogue between Egyptians and Americans.  She has also done work in Ukraine, Republic of Georgia, Barbados, Nigeria, Egypt, Mongolia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Zambia, Vietnam, and in the U.S.  Dr. Johnston is the President of the International Peace Research Association Foundation and administers the Peace Research Grants and Senesh Fellowship Programs.  She served on the Nobel Peace Prize committee for the American Friends Service Committee, has taught at the UN School of Peace in Costa Rica as well as the Dag Hammarskjöld Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies in Zambia. She previously served on the Board of Hands Along the Nile.

Fall 2022

Fall orientation for all incoming CR students (both graduate and undergraduate majors/minors) will be held in-person on Friday September 23rd, from 10:30am--1:00 pm, at Karl Miller Center Rm. 255. For interim questions, please reach out to CR Director Vandy Kanyako (vkanyako@pdx.edu). 

Summer 2022

The CR summer institute will take place from the 17th to the 31st of June 2022. The institute will offer practice-oriented courses geared towards providing hands-on techniques in the resolution of conflicts.

Dr. John Prendergast will feature as the keynote speaker. Dr. Prendergast is a human rights and anti-corruption activist as well as a New York Times best-selling author. He is the Co-Founder with George Clooney of The Sentry, an investigative and policy team that follows the dirty money connected to war criminals and transnational war profiteers. John is also the Strategic Director of the Clooney Foundation for Justice.

He  has worked for the White House, the State Department, two members of Congress, the National Intelligence Council, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, the International Crisis Group, and the U.S. Institute of Peace.  He was part of the mediation team that negotiated the end to the Ethiopia-Eritrea war, supported President Nelson Mandela’s mediation in the Burundi peace process, and contributed to other peace processes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Sudan, and Somalia.

John is the author or co-author of eleven books, two of which co-authored with Don Cheadle. His latest book,  Congo Stories, is co-authored with Congolese activist Fidel Bafilemba and features photographs by Ryan Gosling. John also co-founded the Enough Project, a policy organization aimed at countering genocide and crimes against humanity.
