Anna Bui is a URISE scholar, pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Chinese. This year, Anna has taken on significant roles, serving as the Mentorship Program Coordinator for the Women’s Collaboration of Pre-Health's Students (WCPH) and as a University Studies mentor for Freshmen Inquiry. Her commitment to supporting others extends beyond the university. She has volunteered for six years at the Van Lang Vietnamese Sunday School, where she serves as an emcee for the annual Lunar New Year celebrations. More recently, she contributed her skills to the Oregon Society of Translators and Interpreters, showcasing her commitment to fostering understanding across cultures.
This past summer, Anna began her URISE program research, working with Dr. Greg Scott at OHSU, where she focuses on research related to Parkinson's Disease. In Dr. Scott’s lab, Anna performed immunofluorescent staining techniques to label brain and gastrointestinal tissues for markers in enteroendocrine cells. She captured images of stained tissues and analyzed the images. Through CIMR workshops and her time in the lab, Anna is honing her skills in writing grant proposals and creating research posters, vital tools for her future career as a research physician.
"I’m passionate about biomedical research [and] where we investigate disease causes, to develop preventative treatments,” Anna shares, underscoring her goal of combining patient care with research.
Reflecting on her journey as a CIMR student, Anna values the lessons she learned in effective communication, research ethics, and academic planning. Through CIMR’s workshops and support, she believes lessons learned will be invaluable as she navigates graduate school and professional environments.
Looking ahead to Fall 2024, Anna aims for academic growth and personal wellness. She plans to enhance her wet-lab skills while also prioritizing mindfulness and self-care, striving for a balanced life. With her determination and diverse interests, Anna Bui is poised to make a significant impact in the field of biomedical research and beyond.
When Anna isn’t at school, she loves to learn new languages, listening to music, baking, and gardening!
