Iroha

Hello, my name is Iroha Hirakawa, and I’m from Waseda University.

My major is International Global Studies, and my dream has been to be a flight attendant, so I have always wanted to study abroad to improve my English and to learn about other cultures. That is why last year, I decided to study abroad at Portland State University.

My favorite thing about participating in this study abroad program was taking classes about different cultures. Asian Youth Culture and Japan & the U.S. courses were so interesting! (If you are interested, you should take them!!) There were many students from different countries and backgrounds in all my PSU classes, so I could learn about many topics from different points of view. It was really helpful for me to understand different cultures. Also, there were many campus events that I participated in and made many friends! These opportunities were really useful to make communities and friends. Some events provided food, so I could enjoy the local food! Furthermore, I think that the study abroad program at PSU was really supportive for international students. The professors were really kind. When my friends were in trouble, they responded quickly and helped a lot. So if you ever have any trouble, feel free to ask the staff for help. They’re always there for you and will definitely be on your side.

This study abroad program has definitely changed me. Before I came to Portland, I was a really introverted person and used to stay home after school. But at PSU, there are many opportunities to make friends and make community connections. Even if you are reluctant to participate in the events, the professors encourage you to participate in these opportunities and often assign attending them as your homework^^ Honestly, it was hard to do it at first, but I’m so glad I joined!! And then I began to participate on my own. This is my big change through the program. If you want to know more about the events, you should follow “OIS” on Instagram!!

Finally, the most important thing I want to share is: Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. Studying abroad might seem scary at first, especially if you're shy like I was. But once you take the first step, you’ll find so many new experiences, wonderful people, and personal growth waiting for you. This program gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and discover a new version of myself. Enjoy every moment!! Even the small things can become special memories that you will treasure forever!

Hello, my name is Mie Kichiya. Last year, I studied at Portland State University as an exchange student from Waseda University in Japan. In Japan, I’m majoring in sustainability, and I wanted to learn more about environmental studies and sustainability, so I chose Portland, which is known as an environmentally friendly city, as my study abroad destination.

During my stay, I took several academic classes, such as “Environmental Sustainability” and “Environmental Ethics” in addition to the English classes. It was more difficult than I had imagined to understand the contents of these classes and complete the assignments in English. However, I was able to gain deep learning by reading difficult English literature and exchanging opinions with students whose native language is English, which I would not have been exposed to if I had only stayed at Waseda University. In addition, through learning and discussing with students from all over the world, I realized that the theme of sustainability and environmental issues was shared across countries and cultures.  I was able to view these issues from a global perspective and learned new perspectives, values, and different ways of thinking.

Moreover, during my stay in Portland, I participated in several volunteer activities as a part of the Student Sustainability Center's Garden Team. I am working in the campus garden with other PSU students who are also interested in sustainability and environmental studies. It was a great pleasure for me to meet other people from the US and from all over the world who share the same interests.

To sum up, I felt that my study abroad goal to specialize in sustainability and environmental studies was well accomplished at Portland State University. Furthermore, I was able to improve my English language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The learning and encounters I had through my study abroad experience became precious assets to me. In my future, I would like to make efforts to contribute to a more sustainable society in Japan by utilizing the experience and knowledge I gained at PSU.

For anyone who is interested in sustainability and environmental issues, as well as for all those who aim for personal growth while being exposed to different perspectives and cultures, studying at Portland State University will surely be a great stimulus and growth opportunity. Thus, I highly recommend the Portland Center study abroad program.

Finally, I really appreciate all my teachers, friends, and Portland State University for supporting me during my study abroad experience. Thank you!
