Professor Lisa K. Bates and her research team at Evicted in Oregon have accepted the invitation to join Winston-Salem State University's Research Center of Excellence. The Research Center of Excellence program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development to conduct policy-related research about issues of housing, economic development, and community development in under-served communities. The PSU project, led by Dr. Natalie Cholula, will focus on housing instability in the urban-rural fringe in the state. Previous Evicted in Oregon research found that smaller cities and their surrounding areas are facing serious challenges with housing affordability and eviction, and that there is insufficient service and program capacity to support residents in those areas. (Evicted in Oregon is housed in the Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative and associated researchers are Dr. Minji Cho and Dr. Natalie Cholula)

Professor Maude Hines has been invited to be part of a roundtable at the 2026 Quarry Farm Symposium “Black Childhood and Children’s Literature in the Nineteenth Century” (10/17/26, Center for Mark Twain Studies)
