This January, the PSU School of Business proudly launched the Therese Hampton Endowed Scholarship for Economics and Business. The scholarship supports business and economics students in their academic careers at PSU and aims to inspire students to propel positive social change after graduation.

The scholarship is named for Therese Hampton, a Portland State alumna who was a prominent leader in the energy industry and remembered fondly by many as a brilliant professional, friend and mentor. Therese was recognized as a visionary in the Northwest utility business by her peers, and she led with integrity, transforming the energy landscape. Her commitment to decreasing climate impacts and enhancing grid resiliency reflected her dedication to a sustainable future.

"Aside from being a successful business leader, Therese was a mother, wife, sister, and a trusted friend. She was known as a passionate coach, mentor, and supporter of women in business. Her love for sunshine, nature, good food, and her selfless spirit continue to inspire those touched by her legacy," said Megan Capper, Therese's close friend and former colleague.

Originally from Washington State, Therese embraced Portland as the hub of her academic pursuits. Therese was captivated by the customizable and diverse educational experience offered at Portland State. She obtained both her degrees at PSU—a Bachelor of Science ('91) and a Masters of Science ('92), both in economics. Therese's impactful career unfolded at the Bonneville Power Administration, where she ascended to the role of Vice President for Environment, Fish, and Wildlife. Subsequent positions, including directorship at PacificCorp, and a successful fifteen-year tenure managing an independent consultancy firm, underscored her unwavering dedication to the industry.

After Therese's tragic passing in 2022, her widower, Scott, along with Therese's former colleagues, established the Therese Hampton Scholarship at the Portland State School of Business.

Scott described Therese's self-made path as one of her defining qualities. "She put herself through school, demonstrating resilience and determination. I always loved what a self-made woman she was and her commitment to instilling in others, especially women, the importance of being self-sufficient and of having the ability to support oneself," he said.

The legacy of Therese Hampton lives on through the scholarship, embodying the values she cherished. Scott Hampton expresses the hope that the scholarship encourages students to finish their education and to pay it forward when they create their business success.

"We are proud to partner with PSU to forge a legacy offered through this scholarship fund. It ensures the longevity of Therese's commitment to empowering women and underrepresented groups in economics and business and nurtures future Northwest utility leaders," Scott said.

Starting in January 2024, the financial support from the scholarship will help a PSU student whose academic focus is on sustainable energy, public power, and the environment. The scholarship is open to applications from students in business and economics.
