Service description
URL shorteners allow you to create an easily shareable URL (web address) that directs visitors to a web page or document that uses a longer URL. There are two primary uses for a URL shortener: to have a shorter URL for print or presentation materials or in the case of a longstanding online resource that directs visitors to a document with a URL that may change.
Service details
There are three types of URL shorteners:
- Site-level: This is the primary type of URL shortener; it creates a URL that looks like “pdx.edu/site-name/custom-url-text”. Content Managers for pdx.edu sites can create and manage these URLs.
- Top-level: For high-level short URLs that provide a university-wide service. These display as “pdx.edu/custom-url-text” and require additional vetting.
- goURL: For links to content external to pdx.edu which provides a university-wide service. These display as “go.pdx.edu/custom-url-text” and require additional vetting.
