Explore Campus Rec's history and milestones throughout the years.

The Campus Recreation department has come a long way since a new facility was proposed in 1987. From the demolition of the former Portland Center for Advanced Technology (PCAT) building in 2007 and the grand opening of the Academic & Student Recreation Center (ASRC) in 2010 to our 10-year anniversary celebration in 2020, Campus Rec strives to provide an inclusive environment where recreation and wellness opportunities inspire, empower and educate people to be positive contributors to the global community.

Rec Center Proposal

Before the Rec Center was built, most of Campus Rec's programs and facilities were located in the Peter W. Stott Center building. In 1987, a PSU Presidential Task Force concluded that "...serious thought must be given to the creation of a new building if we are going to meet everybody’s needs."

PCAT Project: 1983-2007

In 1983, PSU acquired the former Blue Cross/Water Bureau building, called the PCAT (Portland Center for Advanced Technology). The State of Oregon approved the PCAT Redevelopment project in 2006. The PCAT building was demolished in 2007 in order to build the Academic & Student Recreation Center (ASRC).

Student Rec Fee Approved: 2004

In 2004, the PSU student body approved a referendum to recommend a Student Recreation Center Fee to be assessed at $41 per quarter for each student taking at least one credit to pay for the construction debt service and long-term maintenance of a new Student Rec Center. The fee was increased to $44 in 2016.
